The plight of the Raiders was discussed in a recent conversation with one of the team’s former stars. Slinging theories is popular among the distinguished alumni, nearly all of whom have one.
But I’d never heard anyone express his so bluntly.
“I hate to say it, because the old man is a legend,” the former player said. “But I think we’re going to be like this as long as he’s around to run things. And I really don’t see him giving that up.”
The conventional thinking is that Al Davis never will sell the Raiders, for they are his life’s passion. That’s the feeling among ex-players, former employees and the broad variety of people who make up the fan base.
Indeed, thousands of fans came together to raise enough cash for a billboard advertisement that went up Tuesday, visible from northbound I-880 above High Street, about a mile south of the Oakland Coliseum. It depicts a Lombardi Trophy — and a plea for the 80-year-old owner and general manager to hire an actual GM.

Coach Tom Cable has been pointing to the Raiders getting healthy as a reason for optimism of late but the only long-shelved players who have a chance to play Sunday are left guard Robert Gallery, who suffered a broken left fibula in Week 2 at Kansas City, and receiver Chaz Schilens, who broke his left foot in a non-contact training camp drill on Aug. 18.
According to Cable, Gallery participated in warm-ups and drills on Wednesda and got in a “few reps in team periods” while Schilens did not practice. Strange, considering the team announced his return last Tuesday and he was actually inactive Sunday due to soreness in the foot.
A more likely return game for the duo would be Nov. 15, after the bye, when the Raiders play host to the Kansas City Chiefs.

How about them Raiders?
OK, calm down Raider Fan, one win doesn’t make a trend.
And two wins certainly don’t make a season, unless of course your team is the one that does actually reside in Oakland.
I kid. I kid.
Apparently the silver-and-black had a quite a surprise outing Sunday, shocking a strong Philadelphia squad by a 13-9 count. Of course, I didn’t get to see the game because not enough Raider fans bought tickets, which resulted in a TV blackout.

You get frustrated with him. With every dropped pass, you curse louder than the day the Raiders drafted him seventh overall. Six games into his rookie season, you’re already sizing him up for that dreaded “bust” tag.
Yes, he should have more than two catches for 36 yards and two reverse runs for 19 yards. But that’s not all on him. Your anger is misplaced.
Instead, you might feel sorry for him. You should also admire him, to a degree.
It’s not Darrius Heyward-Bey’s fault he was picked too high in the draft and could have been taken by the Raiders much later, at a much cheaper cost, and packaged with another draft pick in a trade.
